Buy the cheapest mostly rust free series 2 Land Rover Discovery ( 1998–2005 )
Install a mild lift kit, hopefully these come with diff lockers and other offroad bits.
Swap in a 5.3 Vortec, idk if that is a 5.3 but it should be close enough. Iron or aluminium either way is fine. Doesn’t bother me. Whichever makes more torque.
Install roof bars/ rack, and brushguard, don’t forget the lights. Fenders and snorkel.
Should look close to that, but painted Matte white. The engine would be kept stock, maybe a bigger radiator but that’s it.

Mended.

Or a small torquey diesel, like Ford’s 3.2L from the Transit, instead of the “meh” 5.3 V8.

Also, no V8 is better than a Rover V8.

as long as you are planning to throw chevy junk in it from the git-go, why not just get a chevy platform.?.........
![]() 10/26/2016 at 21:37 |

Not too shabby. But I’d rather do that to this:

I was going to bring that up but then I noticed he correctly put the second ‘i’ in aluminium so I thought I’d leave him be. :)

Mainly for the looks. a Chevy doesn’t have that “Safari” vibe like a Range Rover

Do you mean that like there’s no v8 better than a Rover v8, or that it’s better to not even have a v8 than have a Rover v8?
![]() 10/26/2016 at 21:48 |

Come on, whether we like it or not, the LS is the best V8.

BAMBOOZLED YET AGAIN

And a damn good one too.

The D2 is actually the better sorted chassis and better off-roader IMHO. It would certainly take a large displacement V8 better.
![]() 10/26/2016 at 21:59 |

Probably, but the defender pickup is better looking.
![]() 10/26/2016 at 22:00 |

True dat. I’m still craving a 110/130 pickup.

YES........ those military spec k5 blazers will go pretty near ANYWHERE......... and thats before kitting them up for whatever abuse youre planning........

Well, that’s true, I mean, except for most of them.

My neighbor had a Suburban dressed up as one, really good truck.

Absolutely, I’d love to have one...

An Octavia vRS too? Stop it, you’re making me blush.

I’m pretty sure we’ve had this discussion before, I love Škodas. I designed this sticker and I’m having Dusty make me some:

I dunno I like the small Buick V8's from the 60's.

We have, I just like knowing that I own cars that other people (pretty much just you) find desirable.

Yours is even blue right?
![]() 10/26/2016 at 22:17 |

Proper vRS blue, yes. And it’s the wagon.

Perfection.

If you mean it’s better not to have a V8 at all, you are 100% correct.

Good idea. But royal PITA to execute. I’ve looked into it.

This’ll help

But it’s not a good idea...
The other idea is to put a stroker kit into the existing engine and bust it out to 4.6 litres (or release the same sized engine from a similar vintage Range Rover). Bear in mind that anything more powerful than stock Disco will need other driveline modifications like new half shafts...

Peope have made Defender/Discovery Hybrids, with the chassis of the S1 Discovery and a modified Defender Body. Not sure if that’s as easy with the D2.
![]() 10/27/2016 at 07:37 |

Ok. You need to use a 4L80E, the 60 hits the front driveshaft. The adapter plate from the Chevy trans to Rover LT230 transfer case is like $600-1000... that’s the only crazy money part. Then wiring and OBDII (if thats a thing in your area) can be a bit of a pain. If you plan on swapping the motor, buy a 03-04 DII with blown headgaskets/motor for under $1000.
They don’t come with axle lockers, get a set of Ashcroft or ARB selectables.
![]() 10/27/2016 at 07:38 |

How so? Literally the only thing different is the rear suspension design and the old trailing arm/Upper Y link is arguably better in the D1s and Defenders than the D2's rear geometry.

I’m only basing it on experience of driving both of them off-road on the same courses. The Defender is good and capable, don’t get me wrong, but the Discovery is a nicer place to sit and feels a little more planted on side angles and declines. Tied with a big V8 not built for the vehicle, I’d be happier with it in a D2.
